2021 – Day 5 of Google – YouTube

On the fifth day of Google, we will take a look into YouTube. Some of the features below are not necessarily all new ideas but ideas that are worth taking a second look at.

PLAYBACK SPEED

Ever in a situation where you want to speed through a video? Consider changing the speed by which it is played. Perhaps you are running out of time or you feel like you can get more out of the material if it is sped up. I find myself doing this more and more. If I see a video or webinar that I want to watch, and I see that it is 30 or more minutes, I will change the speed of the video.

Select the gear on the bottom of a YouTube video and change the playback speed to a faster speed. My suggestion is watching at 1.5 speed.

CREATING CHAPTERS WITH VIDEOS

Did you know that you can very easily create ‘chapters’ or ‘sections’ to your videos that you upload in YouTube? This can be very helpful for those that watch your video to quickly jump to a section of the video that they want to know more about. For instance, if I see that there is a 15 minute video, I might be discouraged to see how long it is. Instead, if I see that there are a couple of sections created, then I can jump to the section that I want to pay attention to.

The chapters show up in the Description section of the YouTube video. Times and Chapter titles are provided for the users. How to make this happen? Under YouTube Studio setting,

  • Find your video that you want to add a chapter to.
  • Select the edit pencil icon
  • Under the description section: type time of video and title of the section.

For example:

00:00 Introduction to Google Classroom

00:43 Access Google Classroom

01:37 Create your first Google Classroom

Repeat the process as many times as necessary. Once done, save your changes.

You will notice in the example provided above, at 43 seconds into the video, I would talk about how to access Google Classroom. At 1 minute 37 seconds into the video, I would talk about how to create a Google Classroom.

On the viewer side of things, the viewer would notice at the bottom of the video that three sections existed and they could jump right to that chapter or section. They can also directly jump to a section by selecting the time in the Description section.

SHARING YOUTUBE VIDEO

This tip has been going around social media and I thought I would draw attention to it. There is a way for you to share a youtube video that does not have ads that show up on the right column. Instead the video opens full screen in a new window.

How to make this happen? Alter the youtube video url slightly. In between watch and ? in the url, type “_popup”. That is it. Again, when this link is shared with others, and the select the link, it will force the video to appear in full screen.

If you have any questions, you know where to find me.

And that is my Spiel…
